About Us
Our history
he origins of the company go back to the early 1960’s when antisera was produced to meet the needs of the Immunology Department within the University of Birmingham Medical School. The range of antisera produced was small but novel and of a very high quality, leading to numerous requests for material from immunology groups around the world. During the ensuing years the range of antibodies grew rapidly and in the early 1980’s a commercial immunodiagnostic company, The Binding Site, was founded.
Growth through innovation
Expertise in immunisation and processing techniques gained over the years within the University, and further honed as a commercial company, have enabled us to become a primary antibody manufacturer of world class standing. Polyclonal antibody manufacture is conducted in sheep on our own farms and the annual volume we produce is several thousand litres, both for our own use and as raw material for other manufacturers. The success of this core business has enabled us to build a range of immunodiagnostic products aimed at fulfilling the needs of clinical immunology laboratories, whatever their size or complexity. Despite being a fully independent commercial company we still retain close academic links with our University colleagues to ensure we are at the forefront of Immunology research. The fruits of this collaboration are shared with our customers world-wide. Innovative new products and improved product performance are the benefits of having this academic background coupled with a highly professional scientific and technical manufacturing staff.
Assays to aid clinicians and laboratories
Our product portfolio has grown to include not only the most comprehensive range of IgG subclass assays in the world, but also a significant range of autoimmune products utilising both
immunofluorescence and ELISA technologies. We have also been able to develop the Freelite assays, the first nephelometric tests for measuring free immunoglobulin light chains in serum. These assays give a sensitivity, accessibility and consistency never before achievable, allowing significant improvements in laboratory and clinical practice for the detection and monitoring of B cell malignancies.
Assurance of Quality
As a manufacturer of diagnostic products we understand the necessity of ensuring that the assays our customers use are always of the highest quality possible. As early as 1992 we gained IS09002 certification with IS09001 being gained in 1997. Currently we have certification for both IS09001 and IS013485 (this is a specialist quality system specifically for in vitro diagnostics). On top of this we have FDA clearance for those products sold for diagnostic use in the USA, our clinical products are CE marked for the majority of European countries and have been successfully registered by the regulatory authorities in many individual countries. These rigorous Quality Assurance procedures help ensure that we provide only products of the very highest standard. With technical support and educational programmes offered world-wide we are able to offer all of our customers the benefits of our technical expertise and knowledge.
