Georgia — The Crossroads of Global Health
Georgia’s biotechnology industry is flourishing. The state’s top corporate, academic and public resources are collaborating to help turn ideas into profitable bottom lines. Bioscience is one of Georgia’s strategic industries targeted for growth. The state boasts a diverse biotechnology industry with new and existing companies in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, agriculture and genetic engineering. Georgia’s biotech industry has more than doubled in the past decade and is now ranked seventh among the 50 U.S. states. The state’s fast-growing activities in the biotechnology industry have helped attract Bio 2009 to Atlanta.
Georgia’s life sciences sector employed more than 15,000 Georgians in 2006, not counting public entities like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its 6,500 employees. Our highly ranked research universities, including Georgia Tech, Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia, enable companies to access top research talent and a wellspring of innovation. A strong network of hospitals, medical clinics, colleges, universities and technical colleges provide a growing pool of testing grounds and skilled workers. The success isn’t confined to the state’s borders either. Georgia is home to 75 consular and/or trade offices representing 68 countries. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the world’s busiest and serves more than 85 international destinations. In Georgia, the spirit of collaboration, broad reserves of talent and business-friendly environment make it easy to see why the biosciences sectors are growing.
